In 1934 he was awarded a PhD for his work on copper phthalocyanin ( later marketed by ICI as'Monastral blue') and went to work for ICI Dyestuffs Group in Manchester.

Introduced in 1965, and also known as " Monastral Blue ", the colour was defined by British Standards BR28 / 6001 ( Airless spray finish ) and BR28 / 5321 ( Brush finish ).

She initially carried the white and blue livery of Manx Line, but after this company ran into financial difficulties and was taken over by British Rail-Sealink, she received the BR corporate monastral blue hull, white upperworks and red funnel.
